Are Communist Factions Gaining Ground Inside DSA?

Democratic Socialists of America now has open communist factions inside its ranks, but the evidence does not prove the group itself has adopted communism as its official endgame.

Quick Take

  • Red Star says communists should join DSA and help shape the group from within.
  • DSA’s 2025 convention moved further left and strengthened anti-Zionist rules.
  • DSA’s own bylaws do not show a clear anti-communist clause that was removed.
  • DSA still publicly describes itself as a democratic socialist group, not a communist one.

Communist Factions Are Now Open About Their Goals

Red Star, a Marxist-Leninist caucus inside DSA, says communists belong in the organization and should help build “the party we need.” Its own statement says its goal is to abolish capitalism and ultimately achieve communism. That is a serious fact for readers who want to know how far left parts of DSA have moved. It also shows why critics see a real shift inside the group, even if the whole organization has not adopted that label.

DSA’s 2025 national convention also confirmed that the organization’s internal balance has changed. Wikipedia’s convention summary says revolutionary caucuses such as Red Star, Bread and Roses, and Marxist Unity Group won a majority of seats, while Liberation Caucus describes itself as Marxist-Leninist-Maoist and favors revolution over reform. Those are not moderate labels. They show that DSA now gives more space to factions that openly talk about class struggle, revolution, and the end of capitalism.

Anti-Zionist Rules Show a Harder Party Line

At the same 2025 convention, delegates passed a “Fighting Anti-Zionist DSA” resolution that set “red lines” for members and endorsed officials. The measure targeted people who offered material support to Israel or said Israel has a right to defend itself. The Anti-Defamation League says the final version made anti-Zionism central to DSA’s national stance and pushed that line into local chapters. That is a clear sign of ideological hardening, even if it is not proof of full communism.

For conservatives, the bigger concern is not a slogan. It is the pattern. DSA now hosts caucuses that openly call themselves communist, while its national politics move toward discipline, ideological purity, and punishment for dissent on Israel. That looks less like a broad left-wing coalition and more like a movement where radicals set the tone. Still, the available documents do not show DSA rewriting its platform to say communism is the final goal of the whole group.

What DSA Still Says About Itself

DSA’s official materials and outside backgrounders still describe it as a democratic socialist organization focused on elections, labor, and public power. The group’s own bylaws do not contain a clear clause that says communism is the aim, and they do not show a removed anti-communist rule either. DSA also keeps public distance from old communist states such as the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea. That weakens any claim that the whole organization has officially gone communist.

Zohran Mamdani and other prominent DSA figures also keep using the language of democratic socialism, not communist revolution. That matters because words still have meaning. Democratic socialism seeks to win power through elections and policy fights. Communism, in its classic form, points toward state control of the economy and the end of private ownership. The research shows some DSA factions lean hard in that direction, but it does not prove the organization as a whole has crossed that line.

The Real Story Is Influence, Not Proof of an Official Endgame

The strongest case from the research is that DSA now gives communists and hard-line anti-Israel activists more room than before. The weaker case is that DSA itself has formally admitted communism is its endgame. On the evidence provided, that jump goes too far. The better-supported claim is narrower and still troubling: DSA has become a bigger home for revolutionary left groups, and those groups are pulling the organization left in public view.

That shift should concern voters who value limited government, free debate, and clear boundaries. A movement that normalizes revolution, expulsion politics, and anti-Zionist enforcement is not acting like a healthy civic club. Even so, the record here supports caution, not overstatement. It shows growing communist influence inside DSA. It does not show a clean, official declaration that communism is now the organization’s final destination.
