(JustPatriots.com)- Speaker Nancy Pelosi had just finished giving a commencement address to the graduates of Brown University on the weekend of Memorial Day her husband was arrested in California. She had just urged the graduates to remain resilient and call upon their “better angels.”
The night before, on May 28, Paul Pelosi, age 82, had been in Oakville, one of the most affluent enclaves in the country, leaving a small dinner at the house of Alexander Mehran, a longtime friend, and Democratic supporter. The estate was flanked with hedgerows.
Mr. Pelosi got behind the wheel of his black 2021 Porsche 911 and drove to the Pelosi country house in Napa Valley, a distance of six miles. According to the eyewitness accounts and the police record, it was about 10 p.m.
After a half-mile, he attempted to cross State Route 29 and take a left turn. But as Mr. Pelosi was making the turn, a Jeep traveling down the highway collided with his vehicle.
The officers who responded to the call placed him under arrest for operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 3rd. (The person driving the Jeep was not taken into custody.)
It’s possible that Mr. Pelosi’s inability to drive was caused by more than the booze. Two persons who have communicated with the Pelosis since the incident stated that Mr. Pelosi underwent cataract surgery in the days leading up to the dinner. (The amount of time that must pass before a patient may legally get behind the wheel is a contentious topic among medical professionals; estimates vary anywhere from twenty-four to fourteen days.)
The speaker immediately went into emergency mode. By the afternoon of Sunday, the services of Larry Kamer, a crisis manager who resides in Napa and has previously managed crises for high-profile clients such as Harvard University and Nike, had been recruited. Additionally, the family sought the advice of John Keker, widely regarded as one of the best defense attorneys in San Francisco, and Lee Houskeeper, who has worked as a public relations executive for San Francisco significant figures such as Willie Brown, the city’s previous mayor.
This “dream team” was confronted with a few unwanted certainties, including the that this tragedy would bring further attention to Mr. Pelosi’s problematic driving record, which includes an accident that he caused when he was a teenager, which resulted in the death of his brother.
It would also cast a spotlight on the Pelosis’ existence in California, where the couple resides in two homes, one of which is a 16.55-acre gated estate, and socializing with other wealthy residents during economic hardship is stretching the capabilities of many people with little financial resources.
In the end, a spokeswoman for Ms. Pelosi issued a brief statement in which they emphasized that Ms. Pelosi was not involved in the accident.
The statement said, “The speaker will not be commenting on this private incident, which occurred while she was on the East Coast,” and it was clear that she had no intention of doing so.
