Verizon Outage Disrupts Services Nationwide
On Monday morning, Verizon customers across the United States woke up to a frustrating reality—calls couldn’t be made, and the internet was inaccessible. Starting around 6 a.m., users from Chicago to Phoenix reported issues. By 8:15 a.m., more than 100,000 people made outage reports through DownDetector, affecting major cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Users noted that their iPhones displayed “SOS” mode, indicating no cellular connectivity. This mode is crucial as it allows emergency calls through other available networks—a feature available in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Downed services also caused delays in some emergency responses, particularly in the Bay Area.
Service Restoration and Official Responses
By Monday evening, Verizon announced all services were back to normal, urging anyone still experiencing issues to restart their devices. The FCC closely monitored the crisis, stating, “We’re aware of a Verizon outage impacting customers in parts of the country. We are working to determine the cause and extent of these service disruptions.”
“Verizon engineers have fully restored today’s network disruption that impacted some customers. Service has returned to normal levels,” the company said Monday evening on X.
“If you are still having issues, we recommend restarting your device. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”
The importance of a reliable telecommunications infrastructure came into sharp focus. We all know we need it, but we never think about what will happen if we lose it. And now we have an idea…
This outage is just the latest in a series of network disruptions plaguing various telecom providers in 2024, following a significant AT&T outage in February and a major Microsoft glitch affecting global systems in July.
