While attending the traditionally lighthearted Al Smith Dinner on Thursday, former President Donald Trump went off-script to launch a verbal attack on Bill de Blasio, the former mayor of New York City. Trump’s comments started with a subtle jab, but quickly escalated into an unfiltered tirade.
“We have another former New York City mayor with us,” Trump said, before clarifying, “Frankly, easily the worst in our history. And it’s not Michael [Bloomberg]. That, I can tell you.”

What started as a dig soon turned into an outright condemnation. Looking up from his notes, Trump emphatically declared, “He was a terrible mayor. I don’t give a sh*t if this is comedy or not. He was a terrible mayor.” He then accused de Blasio of enabling crime in New York, adding, “At least Bill doesn’t have to worry about the criminals. They owe him big. He let them get away with a lot of stuff.”
Trump, who has faced his own legal woes in New York, also took the opportunity to mock current Mayor Eric Adams, wishing him “good luck” with his indictment and comparing it to his own legal battles.
The moment, which started as part of Trump’s scripted jokes, quickly became one of the most memorable and controversial moments of the evening.
This is why we love Trump.
