Trump Says John Cornyn Is To Blame For Gun Control

( Last Wednesday, former President Donald Trump blasted Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn for his role in crafting the “bipartisan” gun control legislation introduced last Tuesday.

Calling Cornyn a “RINO,” Trump also attacked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and the bill itself, saying the legislation, which later passed the Senate with 65 votes, would “go down in history as the first step in the movement to TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY.”

Posting on Truth Social, the former president warned Republicans, “be careful what you wish for!!!”

The bill includes provisions to close the so-called “boyfriend loophole” so that unmarried partners can be included in the list of people barred from owning guns if they are convicted of domestic violence. It expanded background checks for gun buyers between 18 and 21 years old. It also provides funding to states that pass legislation for mental health treatment or red flag laws.

On Friday, the Senate bill passed the House 234 to 193, with fourteen House Republicans voting for the measure, including Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

Over the weekend, President Biden signed the Senate measure into law.

Texas Republicans let Senator Cornyn know exactly how they felt about his role in getting this legislation crafted. Two weeks ago, Cornyn was met with boos at the Texas GOP convention in Houston, especially when he tried to tout his gun deal.

While Republican Senators argued that the legislation showed that the Democrats were willing to move more to the Republican side on the issue and noted that the more radical proposals from Democrats were rejected, Senate Democrats were quick to claim victory for the bill’s passage, warning that this was just the beginning of their efforts on gun control.
