Donald Trump described calls he received from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris after two attempts on his life, saying they were both “very nice” to him. Following a July shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Biden telephoned Trump to tell him he was “so sorry” about what happened. Mr. Trump hinted, during a town hall in Michigan, that he wished Biden had not been so kind because it made it harder to attack him afterward.
Similarly, after Secret Service agents prevented a potential shot at the former President in Florida, Harris called him and “could not have been nicer.” However, he added, “The fact is we have to have people that are respected by the opponent.”
Speaking to the National Association of Black Journalists, Vice President Harris likewise described her phone call with Trump, which she said lasted only around a minute. She told him she was glad he was safe. Harris told association journalists that she is in the White House race partly because she desperately wants to defend democracy, and “in a democracy, there is no place for political violence.”
Former President Trump described Harris’s call during a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, which took place under increased security. Hosted by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and attended by around 6,000 people, Trump addressed the auto industry and warned that if Harris becomes President, it will disappear. “China’s going to take over all of your business,” he said.
Discussing the attempt on his life in Florida, Trump said a woman followed his shooter after he fled the scene because she instinctively believed he had done something wrong. “Who does that?” Trump asked before concluding, “Women are smarter than men.” Sanders said the woman’s actions demonstrated how much American women love Donald Trump.
Mr. Trump repeated some of his old claims that he won the 2020 Presidential election with “millions more votes” than in 2016. “People don’t like to hear it,” he added. His critics point out, however, that while Trump did get more votes in 2020 than in 2016, he still did not get as many as Joe Biden, and that’s why he lost. Mr. Trump has previously hinted that he knows he lost the election, but told debate moderators in Philadelphia that he was being sarcastic.
