(JustPatriots.com)- On Thursday, Rep. Tim Ryan (D, Ohio) departed his home state to ask for donations from a group of Hollywood millionaires, including one who sought to limit the amount of money that could be recovered for child sexual assault victims.
Mitchell Kamin, a prominent litigator with a presence in Los Angeles, is one of the hosts of Ryan’s Senate fundraiser. His clients include the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, who made an effort to avoid compensating the victims of Larry Nassar, the former doctor of the United States women’s national gymnastics team who was found guilty in 2017 of repeatedly abusing women and girls, in 2020.
Democratic candidates have already encountered difficulties hosting fundraisers with rich attorneys representing questionable clients. A 2019 fundraiser with a former Chicago city attorney who argued that authorities did not have to share a video depicting police killing an underage black man was canceled by then-presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg in response to outcry from left-wing groups.
Despite knowing about it, Nassar’s victims sued the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for failing to report Nassar’s behavior. Before his victims came out publicly, senior U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials were informed of the allegations against Nassar for a year, according to court records, but they chose not to expel him.
Kamin argued in court that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee was not required by law to inform the relevant authorities of this information. In that case, the group would not be obligated to make any payments to Nassar’s victims, including females as young as 15. Despite being aware of Nassar’s assault, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee allowed Nassar to treat underage athletes at Michigan State for a year.
The victims’ counsel stated in a statement during litigation that “the reason these cases exist in the first place is that these institutions, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, operated under a cloak of secrecy and lack of transparency that permitted sexual assault to fester.”
The judge said that it appears that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has learned nothing, hopes to alter nothing, and seeks a free pass from the court in exchange for several press releases that are merely platitudes with no real change.
Ryan faces a tough challenge from Republican J.D. Vance, who he has called a carpetbagger from California. The congressman made fun of Vance earlier this month for going to a rally with former president Donald Trump rather than watching an Ohio State University–University of Toledo football game.
