(JustPatriots.com)- The public climate in the United States toward the c has hit a new low, in the wake of its controversial decision in June to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case that provided legal protection for abortions across the country.
A new survey conducted by the American Trends Panel at the Pew Research Center found that 48% of those polled view the high court in an unfavorable light. That’s a massive jump from the 29% who responded that way when the survey was conducted in 2020.
When the survey was conducted two years ago, an astounding 70% of those who participated said they viewed the Supreme Court in a favorable light. Now, that number has dropped all the way down to 49%.
The source of that huge drop is not altogether a surprise, either. The survey reported that the opinion of the Supreme Court by Democrats changed much more dramatically over the last two years than that of Republicans.
The overall view of the high court only dropped 2 points among those who identify as Republicans, from 75% saying they viewed the court favorably in 2020 to 73% who said they do so now.
The story is a significantly different one with Democrats. In 2020, 67% of people who said they were either Democrat-leaning or outright Democrats said they had a favorable view of the high court. In the latest version of the survey, only 28% of this same group of people responded that way.
According to the Pew Research Center, that’s the lowest percentage of support among Democrat-leaning or Democrats for the Supreme Court since the organization began tracking this issue back in 1987.
According to the Pew Research Center, the American Trends Panel is a “nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults. Panelists participate via self-administered web surveys.”
In all, 7,647 people participate in the Pew Research Center’s survey, which was conducted between August 1 and August 14. The survey is assumed to have a margin of error in the plus/minus 1.7 percentage point range.
Obviously, a major reason for the huge dip in favorability among liberals is the June 24 ruling the Supreme Court handed down in a Mississippi case that essentially eliminated the constitutional right of a woman to get an abortion. In making that ruling, the high court said the decision on how to handle abortion rights was up to each individual state.
It was a massive change in legal approach to an issue that many had thought was permanently stamped into legal precedent for almost 50 years. At the same time, it follows similar approaches to other big issues, such as legalized sports gambling. The high court overturned the PASPA law a few years ago, which allowed individual states to set their own laws regarding gambling on sports.
Another controversial Supreme Court decision that may have angered liberals is one that gave extra rights to gun owners in the state of New York.
Meanwhile, conservatives have celebrated these decisions, and that was reflective in how they responded to this poll.
