(JustPatriots.com)- Last Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed he has taken an experimental COVID nasal vaccine three days after he received a COVID booster shot.
Putin had been vaccinated this spring with the Sputnik V vaccine which was developed by Russia’s state-funded Gamaleya Center. And on Sunday, he received a booster shot of Sputnik Light, the one-dose version of the vaccine. He also told Gamaleya Center that he wanted to take part in the testing of their nasal version of Sputnik V as well.
Denis Logunov, Deputy Director of Gamaleya Center said he told Putin on Sunday that the nasal vaccine hasn’t gone through clinical trials and is currently being tested “off-label” on the center’s staff. Established scientific protocols require the vaccine to go through several trial phases, including those involving thousands of people, to establish its safety and effectiveness.
In October, Russia’s Health Ministry gave the go-ahead for early trials of the nasal vaccine among 500 volunteers, however, it is not clear whether that trial has started.
During a government meeting on Wednesday, President Putin said six months after he was vaccinated, his antibodies against COVID dropped, so his doctors recommended a booster vaccine.
After taking the nasal vaccine, Putin said he didn’t experience any side effects and was feeling fine.
Russia is currently experiencing a surge in COVID inflections with record-high numbers of new cases and deaths. Fewer than 40 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, even though Russia developed its COVID vaccine months before other countries did.
Russia offers four domestically-developed vaccines. Sputnik V and Sputnik Light dominate the market. The efficacy data for the other two, EpiVacCorona and CoviVac, have not been released.
On Wednesday, a smaller dosage of Sputnik V was approved for use on teenagers ages 12 to 17.
A poll conducted earlier this month found that 45 percent of Russians are unwilling to get vaccinated by the domestically-developed vaccines.
Russia’s state coronavirus task force reported since the start of the pandemic, there have been over 9.4 million confirmed infections and more than 267,000 COVID-19 deaths – giving Russia the highest death toll in Europe.
