Ocasio-Cortez Claims Expiration Of Child Tax Credit Is Cause Of Crime Jump

(JustPatriots.com)- Another day, another ridiculous claim by New York progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

This time, she’s saying that the increase that New York City is seeing in thefts is because the expanded child care tax credit expired as the calendar turned to 2022.

AOC, the public face of the ultra-progressive “Squad” in the House, said these words during an interview she gave with the New Yorker recently. When the conversation turned toward crime in the city, she said she engaged with “hospitals, doctors and social workers,” all of whom told her that the increase in violence was being driven by young men mainly.

She commented:

“And we allow the discourse to make it sound as though it’s, like, these shady figures in the bush jumping out from a corner. These are young men. These are boys. We’re also not discussing the mental health crisis that we are experiencing as a country as a result of the pandemic.”

Then, AOC tried to claim that the child care tax credit was being used as a lifeline by families all over the country. And because it expired on December 31, “now people are stealing baby formula.”

It’s one thing to support something that you believe in. It’s another thing altogether to say that people are now turning to crime because an extended child care tax credit — which was only in place for six months, mind you — is no longer around.

The expanded tax credit was passed as part of the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill that was passed in the spring of 2021. Part of the package increased the child care tax credit from $2,000 per child to either $3,000 or $3,600 for most families — depending on the age of the children.

The “lifeline” that AOC is referring to, though, was a provision that allowed families to take half of that expanded credit up front in monthly installments, with the remainder available to take as a credit when they file their annual taxes, as normal.

Parents could receive monthly payments of $300 for each child under the age of 5, and $250 for each child between the ages of 6 and 17. These payments started in July of last year and lasted through December.

Democrats were hoping to extend that program into 2022 with Biden’s Build Back Better bill, but they were unable to pass it before the year ended. That means that millions of American families haven’t received those monthly payments that AOC said they all relied on.

Now, she’s claiming that because they haven’t been getting those monthly bills, they’ve resorted to crime.

AOC says politicians are avoiding the discussion about how this affects American families on a daily basis — even as one of her party’s own, Senator Joe Manchin, said he wouldn’t agree to it over concerns about rising inflation.

But AOC said:

“We don’t want to have that discussion. We want to say these people are criminals or we want to talk about ‘people who are violent,’ instead of ‘environments of violence,’ and what we’re doing to either contribute to that or dismantle that.”
