Vance’s Overwhelming Victory in CPAC Straw Poll
The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination has yielded a clear frontrunner: Vice President JD Vance.
And nobody even came a close second.
With an impressive 61% of the vote, Vance has established himself as the conservative favorite for the future presidential race. The poll, which surveyed over 1,000 attendees, primarily conservative activists likely to vote in Republican primaries and general elections, is considered an important barometer of conservative sentiment.
Following Vance in the poll results were former Trump aide Steve Bannon with 12% and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis with 7%. Other potential candidates, including Marco Rubio, Elise Stefanik, Donald Trump Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, and Vivek Ramaswamy, each received 3% or less of the vote. The poll results suggest a strong consolidation of support behind Vance within the conservative movement.
Vance’s popularity among conservatives is largely attributed to his position as Vice President and his alignment with President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric. He did, after all, do a great job in the debates – and people are already impressed with his performance in his new role.
Jim McLaughlin of McLaughlin & Associates Polls highlighted noted this during recent media statements, explaining, “He is seen as the closest figure to President Donald Trump.”
This association with Trump, who maintains a 99% approval rating among CPAC attendees, has significantly bolstered Vance’s standing within the conservative base.
Vance’s speech at CPAC last week, in which he defended his remarks at the Munich Security Conference, was met with a standing ovation. His ability to articulate conservative values and address contentious issues has resonated strongly with the CPAC audience. Vance’s comments on culture and gender roles have particularly struck a chord with conservative activists.
He seems like an obvious choice…but is it all just a little too soon?
Well, perhaps – but given that the person who came second was Steve Bannon, it’s hard to really see how any other contender can make up a gap like that. Unless, of course, Vance does a terrible job over the next four years…
And don’t forget that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis still only came third with single digits…
It looks like Vance is the heir apparent. For now.
