President Joe Biden has been hailed as a hero by Democrats ever since he entered the White House—and despite his obvious inability to lead the country. But former House Speaker and California Rep. Nancy Pelosi went a step further the other day by declaring the sitting commander-in-chief should be included on Mount Rushmore.
Pelosi made the comments in an August 4 interview, during which she described Biden as a “Mount Rushmore kind of president.” Even the liberal journalist talking to the former House Speaker found herself verifying what she heard.
The four presidents depicted in the famous South Dakota rock carving are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theadore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Pelosi acknowledged that Teddy is “up there” and “wonderful,” saying that she does not advocate for removing him, but that she is in support of “add[ing] Biden.”
The odd remarks come more than a month after the president’s disastrous debate performance with GOP nominee Donald Trump, in which Biden stoked immense concern among Democrats that he was unfit to run for re-election. The June 27 event showed the president displaying a painful amount of cognitive decline.
Pelosi, however, insisted that the president was “in a good place” and stood on the “top of his game” at the time of his resignation from the upcoming presidential race. Despite the long history of comradery between the president and the former House Speaker, Pelosi has reportedly not spoken to Biden since he dropped out of the race.
The California lawmaker said she would like to talk to Biden and “hope[s]” that their relationship is still positive, expressing that she has “love[d]” and “respected” him for more than four decades. But sources have shared that Biden was less than pleased with Pelosi’s behind the scenes pressure to get him off the ticket.
The former House Speaker apparently told her friend quite bluntly that he couldn’t beat Trump, citing poor performance in the polls. Biden was described by one source as having been “seething” at Pelosi due to her efforts to have him step down from his re-election campaign.
Last month, when Biden finally did so, Pelosi quickly endorsed the party’s new nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she has “full confidence” Biden’s replacement will “lead us to victory” come November.
