(JustPatriots.com)- Controversial Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, who is reportedly under investigation over child sex trafficking accusations, has hired a legal team to fight what he calls “unfounded allegations” made against him. The Department of Justice was revealed to be investigating claims that Gaetz had a sexual relationship with an underage girl and crossed state lines with girls under the age of 18.
A spokesperson for Rep. Gaetz said on Fox News on Friday that the congressman has “always been a fighter.”
“A fighter for his constituents, a fighter for the country, and a fighter for the Constitution,” the spokesperson added. “He’s going to fight back against the unfounded allegations against him.”
Gaetz’s legal team will be headed up by Isabelle Kishner and Marc Mukasey, with the congressman’s spokesperson, saying that they will “take the fight to those trying to smear his name with falsehoods.”
The issue stems from a report by the far-left New York Times in which Gaetz was accused of paying a 17-year-old girl to fly across state lines to engage in sexual relations.
Gaetz has not been charged and the investigations continue, but the Republican congressman insists that it is part of a wider plot to smear his name, including an extortion effort by a former Air Force intelligence officer.
Gaetz revealed the alleged extortion plot during an interview on Fox News with Tucker Carlson. He told the news anchor that the “horrible allegation” is a “lie.”
“The New York Times is running a story that I have traveled with a 17-year-old woman and that is verifiably false,” he said. “People can look at my travel records and see that that is not the case. What is happening is an extortion of me and my family.”
But Republicans are torn on the issue.
President Donald Trump recently denied rumors that Gaetz had sought a pre-emptive “blanket” pardon before he left office, and reminded readers of his statement that Gaetz denies the accusations – but the former president has not weighed in fully on the claims.
Furthermore, some members of Congress have accused Gaetz of bragging about his sexual escapades and showed nude photographs and videos of women he had slept with.
Now that Gaetz has legal representation, we’ll see how this story unfolds.
