Shortly after,  DC Metropolitan Police Department released a security camera photograph to get the public’s help in identifying the perpetrator in a case of simple assault.

The victim was Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN). Craig first won the election to serve Minnesota’s Second Congressional District in 2018 after failing a campaign for office in 2016.

After publishing the suspect’s picture in the alleged attack in an elevator at her apartment complex on Thursday morning, police in Washington, D.C., made an arrest.

Police said that 26-year-old Kendrick Hamlin, also known as Hamlin Khalil Hamlin, “of no permanent address,” had been detained and charged in relation to it.

The suspect, in the opinion of the U.S. Capitol Police, is a homeless man.

According to a police report, Craig said she saw the suspect behaving erratically at approximately 7:15 a.m. in the lobby of her apartment complex. The suspect followed the congresswoman into the elevator after she said, “good morning,” the congresswoman informed the police and “began to randomly perform push-ups.”

The suspect then “punched her on the chin region of her face with a clenched hand,” according to Craig, after which the suspect grabbed her neck. According to the police, Craig threw her hot coffee at the suspect in self-defense.

After the alleged attack, Craig returned to work a few hours later. She voted for a resolution to publicly criticize China over a rumored surveillance balloon that floated over the United States last week, which Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly approved.

Craig and her wife, Cheryl Greene, are married and have four boys.

According to Craig’s office, no proof exists that the event was politically motivated.
