(JustPatriots.com)- Controversial antivirus software visionary John McAfee was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona Spain Wednesday just hours after a Spanish court reached an agreement to extradite him to US to face charges of tax evasion.
According to a source within the Spanish Department of Justice, everything about McAfee’s manner of death “points to suicide.”
However, in a somewhat cryptic tweet in 2019, McAfee claimed he was “getting subtle messages from U.S. officials” that he believed amounted to the message “We’re coming for you McAfee! We’re going to kill yourself.” By way of clarification, McAfee said “If I suicide myself, I didn’t. I was whackd.”
McAfee was arrested at the Barcelona airport in October 2020 on a warrant issued by Tennessee prosecutors for allegedly evading more than $4 million in taxes.
The day before he was found dead, Spain’s National Court had announced that it was agreeing to his extradition to the US, however the decision was not yet final.
McAfee’s wife Janice is demanding a thorough investigation into his death claiming it was not a suicide.
Mrs. McAfee, who had come to the penitentiary near Barcelona to recover her husband’s belongings, told reporters that she had just spoken with her husband earlier on the day he died.
“His last words to me were ‘I love you and I will call you in the evening,’” she told reporters, adding that those were not the words of someone who was suicidal.
Blaming “US authorities” for her husband’s death, McAfee claimed that it is because of the “politically-motivated charges” against her husband that he is now dead.
Since selling his namesake company in the 1990s, McAfee had led a rather eccentric, controversial life.
In 2012 he was sought for questioning, but never charged, in connection to the murder of his neighbor while he was living in Belize. Despite that rather bizarre incident, McAfee made a failed attempt at winning the Libertarian nomination for President in 2016. Though a connection to a murder might actually be a selling point among the Libertarians.
McAfee’s indictment for tax evasion in 2020 sent him abroad to Europe where he and his wife took up residence along the northeastern Spanish coast.
“All John wanted to do,” his widow said on Friday, “was spend his remaining years fishing and drinking.”
According to authorities, the results of McAfee’s autopsy could take days or even weeks to complete.
