(JustPatriots.com)- Last month, one of the co-creators of the popular 90s sitcom “Friends” offered up a groveling mea culpa for creating a popular sitcom that lacked “diversity.”
Series creator Marta Kauffman begged for forgiveness for the monochromatic cast of “Friends” and pledged $4 million to establish an endowed chair in the African and African American Studies Department at her alma mater, Brandeis University.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in July, Kauffman said she was embarrassed for not knowing better 25 years ago when she co-created “Friends.” She explained that the in-custody death of George Floyd in 2020 forced her to confront the sitcom’s lack of diversity, adding she “needed to course-correct.”
And in an odd turn of events, one of Kauffman’s “Friends” cast members, actress Lisa Kudrow, said in an interview last week that the white creators of “Friends” really didn’t have any business writing black characters.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Daily Beast published last Friday, writer Marlow Stern asked Kudlow about Marta Kauffman’s recent mea culpa.
Kudlow said that in a character-driven show like “Friends,” the writers have to write what they know. Considering the show was created by a couple of white Brandeis graduates and based on their lives after college, they couldn’t possibly include stories about the experiences of a “person of color.”
In this current climate, Kudlow has a point.
The Left routinely loses its mind over things like white authors writing black characters or non-gay actors playing gay people.
Just two weeks ago, actor John Leguizamo had a meltdown over actor James Franco being cast to play Fidel Castro because he isn’t Latino.
If Kaufman had created a more “diverse” cast for “Friends,” today, she would be getting attacked for daring to create black characters.
With the Left, it’s damned if you don’t and damned if you do.
