This week, a male was detained by law enforcement in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. According to them, he waited in the restroom of a Walgreens for five hours in order to consume stolen food and cigarettes.
The New Smyrna Beach Police Department arrived at Walgreens around 3 a.m. on July 15th in response to a commercial alarm. Walgreens closed at 10 on Sunday night.
Surveillance video from the shop reveals Morgan going into the Walgreens and entering the bathroom at 9:40 PM. He exited the bathroom after 2:40 AM.
According to a Facebook post, officers saw Christopher Morgan standing inside the store. From behind the counter, Morgan retrieves a carton of Newport cigarettes.
The NSBPD also charged Morgan with stealing and eating chocolates, a Dr. Pepper, chips, and spinach dip.
The police then assisted Morgan in unlocking the door, and the sound of the security alarm was heard on the policeman’s body camera. In response to officers’ inquiries about what time Morgan thought it was, he reportedly said it was probably 11 PM. He then explained that he only entered Walgreens to use the bathroom. When officers placed Morgan under arrest outside, Morgan appeared confused and claimed that he was unaware if anybody else was inside the store.
According to the police, Morgan spit on an officer when he refused to be placed into the police car.
In addition to his two previous convictions for robbery and petty theft, Morgan is facing charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting a police officer, and burglary of an empty building.
Theft from an unoccupied building is a third-degree felony in Florida and carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, five years probation, and a fine of $5,000. Burglary of an Unoccupied Structure is a Level 4 offense, which is the most serious, according to Florida’s Criminal Punishment Code.
