In Illinois, a father has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for the brutal murder of his 17-year-old daughter, Mia Maro, following a disagreement over her attendance at prom. The tragic incident occurred in May 2022, with Maro just weeks away from her high school graduation. She attended Victor Andrew High School in Tinley Park.
Court records show that the father, Mohammed Almaru, initially gave his daughter permission to attend her prom but later reversed his decision, citing trust issues. This disagreement escalated, with Maro reportedly fearing for her life, telling a relative before the fatal incident that she believed her father might “beat her” or even “kill her.”
On May 1, 2022, Maro’s body was found in the family’s home, with signs of severe physical trauma. An autopsy revealed extensive bleeding in her brain, along with bruises on her face, arms, legs, and skull, indicating a violent assault. Authorities discovered Almaru nearby with self-inflicted wounds in an apparent suicide attempt after the crime. Despite his claims that his daughter’s death was accidental, the court found him guilty of first-degree murder.
The tragic case shocked the community, and a GoFundMe campaign raised $45,000 to cover Maro’s funeral expenses.
Given his age, Almari is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars. And rightly so.
