Doctor Banned From Performing Procedure After Patient Dies

(JustPatriots.com)- A Coral Gables cosmetic surgeon has been officially barred from performing the popular procedure known as the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) after one of his patients died as a result of the surgery last year.

In a previous complaint filed against Dr. John Sampson’s license in 2021, both Sampson and the Seduction Cosmetic Center in Coral Gables informed the Florida Department of Health that Sampson would only serve as the designated physician at the center and would not perform any surgeries himself.

However, that was not the case.

According to the Miami Herald, between April 2021 and June 2021, Sampson continued to perform surgeries, including seven on June 16, 2021, alone.

An administrative complaint filed against his license alleges that during one of the surgeries performed on June 16, 2021, Sampson punctured the liver and intestines of a patient while removing fat from her abdomen to place in her gluteal muscles. This particular BBL technique has been illegal in Florida since 2019.

That patient, a 33-year-old woman, later died during the night.

The administrative complaint also alleges that Seduction Cosmetic Center and Dr. Sampson later manipulated the patient’s paperwork.

Last Friday, the Florida Board of Medicine announced that Sampson was barred from performing BBL procedures and must pay a $20,000 fine along with $5,626 for investigation costs. Sampson must also acquire five hours of medical education in records keeping and present an hour-long lecture on liposuction and gluteal fat grafting, the procedures used in BBL.

While he still keeps his medical license, Sampson is barred from holding a designated physician position at any other surgery center in the state.

Seduction Cosmetic’s website still listed Sampson as a “board-certified surgeon.” However, the Florida Department of Health lists his only board certification as suspended.

This is the second time in five years that a doctor from Seduction Cosmetic Center was barred from performing BBL after the death of a patient. In 2017, surgeon Osakatukei Omulepu was also barred after one of his patients died.
